I think this is a great idea for a schema. I'd like to suggest adding an "artist" property, since the same song might have videos by different artists if it's been covered. Just a thought.

Here's were some of my early experiments with Music Video (which thought would be part of a more generic multimedia performance) Multimedia Perfomance. Of note is that there may be visual performances (lip-synch, dancing, actors or other famous people doing cameo appearances and then singing performances).
You might want to consider including genre, subject, part of series, featured in tv show or film, etc.

Hello gmackenz! Thanks for the heads up on "Multimedia Performance". Definitely looks like the same intention; so unifying these would seem like a good idea!
Did you have ideas beyond music videos of what people would be interested curating on Freebase as Multimedia performances?
In thinking about Music Video schema, the places I had to look were the iTunes store (whose fields turned out to be lame) and the mvdbase, which is very much like IMDB in terms of its focus:

I was tempted initially to say that music videos were merely films which happened to point to musical tracks. cheunger said it was better to make them different. I certainly defer to the experience of those who regularly design Freebase schemas to solve this, but would only point to the mvdbase site as a reference for things that people have found valuable to track...

I was going to use MP as a way to capture the *magic* of song & dance portions of movies as well as music videos. So it would be used in the now sleeping Dance Porn base for users to find who danced in what great routine to what music when in Girls Just Want To Have Fun or Footloose or even Singin' In The Rain. Segments which actually deliberately resemble music videos in content and form.

Generally speaking, the music schema is complicated enough to handle the idea of different recordings of different compositions by the same artist. So making sure a video points to the specific recording used is probably going to be good enough...most of the time!
Yet an example case of two very different "multimedia performances" for the same recording of a song might be "Yatta":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=At-pfAFUldE
It's a bit pathological because the flash version is done by a third party completely uninvolved with the artist. Yet it uses the same recording--and is possibly more well known in "internet culture" than the official video.
But clearly they would be differentiated by the name of the "director" and the release dates. Perhaps some sort of "official" labeling would be in order to help in cases where a video was made and authorized by the artist? -
Well, you could have an enumerated property with topics like these: Official video release from artist, fan-edit of official video release, fan-created work, etc.
You'd have to make sure the music performed property is pointing not to the song/composition topic but the edition topic of the song from the album or single.

Hi Bryan, thanks for the insights at Build-A-Base! I was glad to get to speak to a developer who could give some insights to the schema "issues". Apologies if my music-related project touched upon some of the more contentious aspects of the music domain. :) I'm still confused about exactly what aspects of the reality of compositions/songs/tracks Freebase considers relevant in the long term vs. what is an artifact of the early schemes for data importation.
I've made you an administrator on this base so you can fix it up as you see fit. One thing that we didn't get to was to link "Music Video, the type" to "Music Video, the Freebase topic"... so that would be nice to get going. (What did you call that... domain linked types?)
I did a little research and Google pointed me to mvdbase.com which has 56,000+ entries for music videos. That looks like a good source of information, and I used it to get some dates. But more generally, it is a reminder that there's a lot more out there than one would want to enter by hand (!) It would be great to synchronize with that. But people can sometimes be very territorial with their data, even if it's about matters of "public record".
There are many side issues I hit while using the system which I will make notes of. For instance, I noticed that there is redundancy (e.g. I have to name the music video topic for "Da Funk"...when you'd think the name would be derived from the song the video is for.) I'm sure Music Video is not the first type to have exposed this pattern.
I went ahead and made two "Hurt" videos in order to insert a real case of two different videos for the same song by different artists. Would be interested in your view of how to sort this out long term, and if there's a truly better way.
In any case, hope you like the changes since Build-A-Base!!!
